We offer two courses on managing Legionella: a one day course for those who have responsibilities only for hot and cold water systems, and a two day course where the second day deals with managing Legionella in cooling systems and other at risk systems.
Attend our open courses or run them on your own premises.
Managing Legionella in hot and cold water systems
1 day course
Who should attend
This course is for those who have responsibilities only for hot and cold water systems, also known as ‘domestic’ water systems. HSE’s guide on controlling Legionella, L8, requires that appointed personnel are identified and that these persons are competent, even if you employ specialist firms to carry out most of the work. The named person could be a manager, engineer, safety officer or other suitable person in your company. This course will also benefit anyone one who is not a ‘appointed person’ but otherwise has responsibilities for Legionella control.
Information
Legionella bacteria can colonise many water systems and cause legionnaires’ disease if droplet become airborne. Although outbreaks of the disease are thankfully rare, there is the potential for many people to be made ill. About 12% of cases are fatal.
The risks a can be controlled and many companies employ specialist contractors to carry out the work. However, the company operating the water system retains legal responsibilities, and close cooperation with the contractor is vital to maintaining control. The appointed person, and others with responsibility for Legionella control, must be adequately trained and competent.
This course provides a basis for that competency.
Course includes:
- Legionella growth and diseases
- Risks from hot and cold water systems
- Legislation and guidance on control
- Methods of control
- Maintenance and checks
- The roles of contractors and systems operators
